When my wife Tricia told me that Kaitlyn was going to need to get some blood taken for a genome test I initially just mentally filed it in as ‘just another test’. I knew Kaitlyn had hypotonia, I knew she had delays but I also knew that her MRI results came back fine so I was still coming off the high of knowing there was no cerebral palsy. In short, Yes I accepted my daughter had some issues but, I think because all parents do this to a degree my mind was resistant to accepting anything more than that. Tricia, being a nurse and more specifically a nurse at CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) her face showed that of someone who was not treating this test with any level of flippancy. Since her MRI was OK, the next logical place to look was in the chromosomes. One side of me wants to feign ignorance but that’s really hard considering how left brained I am. One part of me obviously wanted to nail down what exactly was affecting my daughter but there was another side of me that just didn’t want to know.
